Average spend up as pubs and bars grow share
Latest data from Lumina Intelligence’s Eating & Drinking Out Panel indicates a shift in channel share during the four weeks to 11 July 2021 driven by the Euros. As consumers gathered to watch the football, pubs and bars have continued to gain channel share, accounting for 15.0% of total eating out occasions across the four weeks – up 2ppts versus the previous period. Restaurants have also continued to grow share, up 0.6ppts to 12.7%.

Domino’s ‘strong’ first half sales supported by VAT cut
Domino’s has delivered a “strong” performance for the first half of 2021, aided by reduced VAT, the Euros, an increase in orders and the chain’s own marketing activity. In the 26 weeks to 27 June 2021, UK and Ireland system sales grew 19.6% to £752.3m. Like-for-like system sales, excluding splits were up 19.3% (18.4% including splits). The chain warned that second half growth would be lower due to scheduled VAT increases.

KFC ads banned over ‘cluck’ row
Two print ads for KFC have been banned after the ASA agreed with complaints that it had substituted the word ‘Cluck’ for ‘Fuck’ during a recent campaign. A poster displayed at bus stops and other locations during September featured the phrase “What the cluck?! £1.99 fill up lunch” while print ads in the Metro and the Sun were identical except one featured the elongated word “cluuuuuck”.

The ASA has said a tweet by Burger King was irresponsible and warned it must ensure its ”future marketing communications did not condone or encourage anti-social behaviour.” On 18 May 2019 Burger King sent a tweet which read: “Dear people of Scotland. We’re selling milkshakes all weekend. Have fun. Love BK. #justsaying”.
