Yates Group yesterday introduced new minimum prices in its bars.
The initiative, which includes banning all-you-can-drink offers, is a response to the rising tide of binge-drinking.
Mark Jones, who heads the operator of the Yates, Canteen and Forno Vivo and Ha! Ha! Chains, said binge-drinking was the "biggest single issue" facing the industry. His company has set minimum prices of £1.25 for a price of beer and £1 for a single spirit. It will offer free soft drinks to designated drivers as part of the new "Bar-Safe" policy.
However, Yates will not ban all promotions. It will continue to offer deals, such as two alcopops for £2.50 and a double of spirits will be cheaper than two singles. Jones said managers who did not tow the line would be denied their bonus. It will introduce toughened glassware to prevent glasses being used as weapons.
