How is McDonald’s getting it right?
McDonald’s released its Q3 results on Tuesday, revealing a 5.9% increase in sales for the three months to 30 September 2019. Total sales for the period were up 1% to $5.43bn, making it the 17th consecutive quarter of growth for the chain. A 1% nudge isn’t going to generate huge headlines, but it’s another move in the right direction. In a call to investors, McDonald’s president and CEO Steve Easterbrook said across “every country function and level we’re seeing improving discipline and robust levels of execution that are guided by our velocity growth plan.

What next for Chick-fil-A in the UK?

The US giant, which has over 2,400 restaurants and just hit $10.5bn in sales, has chosen The Oracle shopping centre in Reading as its first permanent destination in Europe. Can burger sales stay strong in the face of increasing alternatives?
Despite growing food adventurism, the proliferation of diverse cuisines and the ongoing rise of plant-based offerings, beef burgers still account for one in nine of every dinner consumed outside the home. Sales are also in year on year growth. As such, it is difficult to argue with leading US restaurateur, Danny Meyer, who said: “At the base level, a burger is a piece of meat and a bun with something on it. It’s simple but it seems to make a lot of people happy.”

McDonald’s to go – convenient format but with convenience pricing too
Working not far from McDonald’s new take-away only concept store, simply called “to go” on Fleet Street, I had taken a healthy interest in the media coverage about the new format. So in many ways I knew what to expect. I was aware that it would not have any seating, or toilets, and that product ordering and payment would be via wall-mounted slimline touchscreen kiosks only. I had also read that that there would be a reduced menu within a reduced size outlet. What I had not expected is that there would be a price premium to pay.

McDonald’s escapes slapdown over Big Mac ad
McDonald’s has escaped censure by the ASA after a radio ad for a Grand Big Mac Bacon was cleared by the advertising watchdog. The ad, broadcast on Virgin Radio on 8 March, featured two men talking about their lunch. One said he had a “packed lunch … with a cheeky little choccy bar”. The other said: “That looks tiny, have they made them smaller?” to which the first man replied: “Yeah, they used to be twice as big”. The other said: “You’ve been robbed, mate” before he said he had a “Grand Big Mac Bacon…
